What is Capoeira?
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that grew out of the African slaves and their quest for freedom in the 1600's. It looks like a dance, it can be a fight, but it is always a celebration of freedom and life. Capoeira blends elements of dance, gymnastics, martial arts, music and power. It is within anyone's reach no matter what your fitness level.
What will I learn?
• Stretching for improved flexibility
• Aerobic movements for improved fitness
• Self defense skills
• Capoeira music and singing (including drumming)
• You will learn the basic movements for capoeira and maculele:
– Capoeira Regional: a fast exciting style of capoeira. It is the most common form of capoeira played these days.
– Maculele: a folkloric dance using sticks based on the story of a boy who defended his village against attackers.
